Wikipedia: OpenTherm OT is a standard communications protocol used in central heating systems for the communication between a central heating boiler and a thermostatic controller.Keras image comparison
A two way communications interface, usually in the form of a slave and master device. As a standard, OpenTherm is independent of any single manufacturer. A controller from manufacturer A can in principle be used to control a boiler from manufacturer B. However, OpenTherm controllers and boilers do not in fact always work properly together. The OpenTherm standard comprises a number of optional features and some devices may include manufacturer-specific features.
The presence or absence of such features may impair compatibility with other OpenTherm devices. This was no doubt to make the standard independent of any manufacturer. So as the current temperature starts getting closer to the set point temperature, the boiler starts reducing the flow temperature to match the required demand.
OpenTherm is easier to use on combi boilers. The reason for this is that there is no hot water cylinder to worry about, heating to the correct temperatures as required by legionalla prevention recommended 60 degreesas OpenTherm can reduce flow temperatures to below 60 degress. So, on system and regular boilers that have opentherm, in order to also work with hot water cylinders, cylinder temperature reporting must be present in some form.
This allows the OpenTherm to fire at high temperature just for the hot water. For Manufacturers: If your boiler model is not in this list, please contact us via our contact form or via twitterAdditional Information.
Vaillant Ecotec 4XX Series requires additional steps. The following boiler models, mostly Vaillant and Worcester Bosch are capable unofficially. Using the mentioned adaptors may invalidate your warranty. However boilers that are out of warranty will have no known problems, as these adaptors are purpose made by the companies themselves for some European countries, where governments have made it compulsory to have OpenTherm. Following are a list of OpenTherm compatible controls.
These controls are compatible with Open Therm Capable boilers shown above. Smart Thermostats are listed first. Where an addition tranceiver is required it will be specificied in the brackets.

It is not on your list of OT compliant boilers. The installation instructions suggest that it is compliant and I am hoping you can confirm one way of the other. Thanks Paul Cracknell. Hi Paul, We have checked the instruction manual, it clearly shows on page 22, that it supports opentherm. We have updated the list to reflect this. Please note, we cannot state the effectiveness as manufacturer implementations of OpenTherm vary between boiler brands, as has been reported by various specialists, so the performance of the OpenTherm setup may also vary.

Baxi, Ideal, Viessmann, Ferroli and Main all manufacture combi boilers using the Opentherm technology. These boilers are compatible with many mainstream smart and standard heating controls, including Nest, Tado and Honeywell. We guide you on which products are Opentherm below and your alternatives if they are not. This makes them very efficient as they can reduce their output during warmer periods.
Both weather and load compensation thermostats are designed to work with modulating boilers and control what kW output the boiler should be operating at. Most manufacturers use a unique language for their own boilers and controls. This means that the number of compensation control brands that will work with a specific boiler is limited. Opentherm is available to for any boiler or heating control manufacturer to use and means that different brands are compatible with each other.
We guide you on which brands use the Opentherm language below. The new regulations differ however for heat only and system boilers and existing installations, as follows:.
For compensation controls, they must speak the same language. You can still opt to install an advanced control and we guide you compatibility below. You can replace your room thermostat with another room thermostat and nothing more. Again you can opt for an advanced control or may wish to have the functionality of an internet control and we guide you suitable products below.
Table 1 below shows which boilers are Opentherm compatible. Only Baxi and Ideal produce their own compatible Opentherm controls to go with their boiler, but that does not matter! Any of the third party Opentherm controls in Table 2 will operate these boilers!
Any of the third party controls below will operate any of the boilers listed in the above table.

Out of seven third party controls, five are internet controls and two are standard programmable room thermostats. As they all carry load compensation controls Opentherm they are all compliant under Boiler Plus. Remember that only combi boilers must be fitted with an advanced control under Boiler Plus, although that is not to say you cannot fit a advanced control on other boiler types or on older boilers.
We guide you on options for non-combi boilers and older boilers below.

For those having a new combi boiler fitted, your options fall into two categories:. Six boiler manufacturers produce their own Boiler Plus complaint internet heating control that will work with some of their range of boilers.
Table 3 shows advanced controls from size boiler manufacturers with compatible boiler models from their range. Unlike compensation controls that adjust the gas valve, optimisation controls build up patterns of use to operate the boiler most efficiently.

Good evening you marvellous lot! So, i have a client that wants the Vaillant pure combi boiler my go to rear flued boilerwith a Nest controller. As far as I can tell, there is no easy way of making these 2 work easily together. Does anyone have a new or up to date info on this? Cheers, J. ShaunCorbs Staff member. Gas Engineer. Why not you have Lne and then your call for heating once you remove the 24v link?
Hi Shaun, Sorry, I was not clear and you are right. I want to make it work with the low voltage OpenTherm connections.Vaillant does not support OpenTherm directly out of the box in the UK. In a few european countries, such as the Netherlands, OpenTherm is highly prevalent and used, such that most boilers supplied have an OpenTherm interface or an adaptor to allow control.
It is produced by Vaillant primarily for the Netherlands. It is however not officially supported in the UK. We have installed it ourselves on previous jobs with success.
Vaillant has other brands in Europe that also use the same electronics. This adaptor works out at approx We have successfully set up a system to operate a Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation using OpenTherm interface to control the Vaillant boiler via the VR33 module.
We have successfully used Honeywell Evohome with a Vaillant system boiler using a R evohome interface connected to a VR33 module to operate the Vaillant boiler in OpenTherm modulating configuration. In this setup, external hot water also works at a basic level. We have been informed by other OpenTherm pros that, although this setup works, OpenTherm may not respond as well as it should, as compared with boilers containing built in OpenTherm interfaces.

The boiler will use more or less gas, as appropriate, to reach the water temperature set by the thermostat. But sometimes you might need to quickly speed up to get around a slower car or to avoid a hazard.
But something needs to tell the boiler what to do. In this case, the Nest thermostat is the one driving. It will use its advanced algorithms to tell your boiler when to change its target water temperature so that it will use more or less gas as needed.
